Ryder was busy inventing different ways to use the tubes for nearly an hour today undisturbed. There was no need for a teacher to intervene and "tell him" or "show him" how to do things "this way". Ryder was in his imagination. We as teachers can not be in the child's imagination with them. We can only guess at what is happening. How damaging to his play could it have been if I had said "are you bird watching? come with me and see what birds we can find" when really he was being a pirate, looking for land and building cannons. Only Ryder can tell us what is happening, but shhhhhh don't ask him yet, he is imagination building, and imagination building should not be disturbed.
