![]() On Monday, we were really quiet so made the most of only having a few children and everyone piled in the van and went to the community garden. The children weeded around the parsley and silver beet. Ashleigh-Jayde pulled out a big clump of weeds and showed it off proudly, while Katarina went on a worm hunt. It wasn’t long until 3 or four worms had been found and the children started comparing them. Some of the children then took the opportunity of a big wide field and went for a huge run. Over the next few weeks we hope to grow our own seedlings so we can contribute to the community garden as well as plant some in the centre garden patch and send some home. So far we are taking good care of the sunflower seeds. These have already sprouted, and after only being planted for 4 days. Ka Kite Leigh.

![]() Fridays a quiet day at Educare so perfect for having a special morning tea. Around 9am Stephanie and I set up the table with the baking ingredients. The children saw what was happening and went to go wash their hands and sit down at the table. Everyone proceeded to have a turn at measuring out and adding the ingredients to the bowl and beating up the batter. The children helped clear away the table and out came the fry pan. The children then had an hour long feast of pikelets. They waited patiently while they bubbled and cooked. Then they chose their spread and covered their treat and ate them up. Do you bake or cook with your children at home? Do you want some of our Educare recipies? There is a great amount of learning involved when baking and cooking. The children are learning about maths, such as measurement when when scooping out cups, and teaspoons of ingredients. They are learning about science, when they see wet ingredients and dry ingredients mixed together to make a batter. Also the reaction when heat is added to the mixture. Literacy is being developed as you generlly follow a set recipie and have to follow a process to get the desired result. The childrens self esteem is also increased as they have taken on a leadership role in the participate of food prep for others. This afternoon me might make some chocolate cupcakes. May not have time to ice them though. Maybe you could do this with your child when they get home, and share a yummy treat together. |
