Today we transported some of our older children on the bus to the fire station. We went on this excursion because many of the children have been following the urge to transport. They have been transporting each other and the dolls in the pushchairs, puzzles in bags, sand and water in buckets as well as themselves on balance bikes, moon hoppers and trolleys.
When we arrived at the bus stop to go on our trip, we sat down and waited … and the bus drove on without stopping. Oh dear. Stephanie had a jog around the corner to try and stop if but it pulled away from the next stop before she got there. So we played some circle games on the side of the road and had a snack while we waited for the next bus. It wasn’t going to miss us again.
When it arrived we climbed on board and sang the wheels on the bus to the bus driver and the patrons on the bus. We were all rather loud. We climbed off the bus outside the hospital and crossed the road at the pedestrian crossing. One naughty campervan didn’t stop for us, just as well we were all holding hands and had not started to cross yet.
We arrived at the fire station and were shown around. Kingston and Pere dressed up as firemen in their firefighting uniform. We then got to climb into the fire truck. It was a long way up, but everyone managed to scramble in. Outside we went next, and we all got to squirt the fire hose. Some children were egged on by the firefighter to squirt me. Only Maarearea managed to get me wet, and only a little thankfully. We talked about smoke detectors and Rahiri-Lee was very knowledgeable on these and was able to answer all the questions for us. We were told that if we don’t have smoke detectors at home to let the firemen know and they will give us some. They may even put them up for you.
We then said our good byes and gave them a chocolate cake, and make our way back to the bus stop, where we waited patiently for the bus once again. Ohomauri fell asleep on the footpath leaning against me so had to be carried onto the bus where he slept peacefully all the way home. Brody helped me by carrying our bag and Temarie had a snuggle on the bus ride home too. A few other children napped on the long ride home, but still managed to wake up enough to walk from the bus stop back to kindy where lunch was waiting for us.
It was a massive excursion and the children had a lot of fun, giggling and laughing at the antics of the fire fighters.
